PETITON FROM MAJOR JOHN C EVERSOLE 14TH KY CALVARY COMMANDING
To His Exellency James F Robinson
Governeor of Kentucky.
The undersigned members of the 2nd & 3rd Battalion of the 14th Reget of Cavalry for state ^mounted service would most respectfully state to your Honor that the Counties of Breathitt, Owsley, Perry, and Letcher but more particullarly the County of Breathitt are now without any protection whatever. and the union men of said Countys have nearly all enlisted and gone into the army of the U S Army and have left their Counties and homes unprotected and to the mercies of the Rebels, who have robbed them of every thing we had took all of our Stock Corn & Hay in short taken all we had and have stuooped so low as to strip our wives and Children of their wearing clothes, and in ther present Condition must now starve to death, and have their Houses burned unless your honor will send us some protection, now we therefore would most earnestly pray your Honor to grant us Some releif and all we want is to be armed and equipt in good stile and then send us back to the mountains from whence we came and we will protect the Countys above mentioned and our own homes. grant us this one request and it is all we ask,
